Voting intention for Guild Council 19/6/2014

Standard

Here are my voting intentions for the last Guild Council of the year, being held today at 6pm in the Guild Council Chambers.

Any questions/queries/issues on these intentions, or if you have any strong views on particular motions please let me know at axs278 [at] bham.ac.uk

Also thank you to everyone who voted to reject both of the proposals in the recent Guild referendum; this will make it easier (or at least less difficult) for us Liberation Associations to continue trying to make the Guild a body that works in the interests of, and can better support, Liberation students.

P.S. I’ll have voting records for the last few Councils up soon I swear.

Peace,

Azfar

Motion title Motion summary My voting intention
14a) Real Student Rights Guild to publically condemn the Student Rights organisation for Islamophobia and targeting of Muslims in its work, to encourage the University to distance itself from the group, to support the counter-organisation Real Student Rights and to support Islamophobia Awareness Month in November. For

For more on Student Rights see here

14b) Referenda motionDeferred from May Council Non-essential Guild referendums (like the recent Democratic Structures/Officer Review ones) not to be held in third term because it’s unfair on campaigners who have exams.

Question/wording of referendums to be decided by Guild Council (rather than Trustee Board) because otherwise they could be leading

For
14c) GOG motionDeferred from May Council To have regular Guild Officer Group (GOG) meetings (which include all Full and Part-time officers) take place of SOG (just full-time officers) as the other decision-making body of the Guild (in addition to Guild Council).

Ensures Liberation/Campaigning officers have input into the Guild’s political direction during these meetings also.

For
14d) BitcoinDeferred from May Council Introduce Bitcoin currency as a form of payment on campus. Still dunno what Bitcoin is.

Will have to be swayed during Council.

14e) All residents are equal Change the system slightly for Residents Associations Guild Councillor positions so that students 3rd-party accommodation can be represented. For(probably)

14f) Who’s Chair
Deferred from March Council
Proposes a question to go to the General Meeting under Company Law to be held next year (as voted through in last Council) that would change (if voted in) the chair of the Trustee Board from an unelected Lay Trustee to the Guild President. For

14g) Is this fare? Officers to review the Guild’s taxi accreditation system and carry out a full tender of taxi companies wishing to secure accreditation from the Guild, so that the best service providers can be properly assessed. For
14h) Calling of Emergency General Meeting Proposes a question to go to the General Meeting under Company Law to be held next year that would lower the number of student signatures needed to call a General Meeting (5%->2%) For

This was one of the special resolutions of the General Meeting held last year which fell narrowly (but is still as good an idea as before)

14i) Election of Student Trustees Proposes a question to go to the General Meeting under Company Law to be held next year that would change the way Student Trustees are elected, from the current closed ‘interview’ system to a cross-campus election that student can vote on. For

The current interview system has in recent history proved controversial, with accusations of Guild staff interfering/subverting the process.

More democracy more transparency.

One of the special resolutions from the last General Meeting.

14j) Removal of the University Trustee Proposes a question to go to the General Meeting under Company Law to be held next year that would remove the University’s representative position on the Guild’s Trustee Board. For

Conflict of interest to be having a University representative governing an organisation (the Guild) that may need to oppose or pressure it.

One of the special resolutions from the last General Meeting.
