An open letter to FEMEN

Standard

(re-post)
Open letter to Femen by April Reilly from Muslim Women Against Femen:

“Hey FEMEN,

We understand that it’s really hard for a lot of you white colonial “feminists” to believe, but- SHOCKER! – Muslim women and women of colour can come with their own autonomy, and fight back as well! And speak out for themselves! Who knew?

We are proud Muslimahs, and we’re sick of your colonial, racist rubbish disguised as “women’s liberation”!

BECAUSE we are fed-up and tired of hearing from women of privilege perpetuating the stereotype that Muslim women, women of colour and women from the Global South are submissive, helpless and in need of western “progress”.

BECAUSE it is these kinds of colonial attitudes that commit more harm than good, so stop trying to kid us.

BECAUSE we are sick of the appropriation of our terms and our customs, done without our permission for whatever reason people see fit.

NUS National Conference 2013 – Officer Candidates

Standard

Along with voting on NUS policy, the other major role of National Conference is to elect the leaders that will carry through and realise those policies.

Below are my feelings on and preference for the candidates standing this year.
These are pretty much based solely off how the candidates present themselves in their manifestos, and so most of what is written below is instinctual, stream-of-consciousness, subject to change, open to challenge etc.
Your feedback is particularly welcome here, so for any objections or suggestions, comment below or email me at axs278@bham.ac.uk

NUS National Conference 2013 – AGM motions (700)

Standard

These are the motions going to Conference under the ‘AGM Proposals section’. These motions deal with the more technical aspects of NUS/Conference process and structure and often entail changes to the NUS’ rules.
As such there are a number of motions that i’m currently undecided on (-) or at least open-minded to, and will need to hear the proposers arguments before making a decision.

For illustrative purposes, here’s a download link to the NUS Articles of Association and Rules 2012, with comments detailing what changes to what rules are being proposed by what motions.
Edit: Slightly updated the PDF in the link; the motion referred to as ’70E’ is now motion 713 in the Final Proposals list.

For any questions please comment below or email me at axs278@bham.ac.uk

NUS National Conference 2013 – Welfare Zone motions (600)

Standard

These are the motions being proposed to Conference for the Welfare Zone, who deal with issues that affect the Welfare of students within their academic institution or in their living accommodation (as opposed to the issues they would be subject to in wider society that affect them, which generally come under the Society & Citizenship Zone).

As you can see, I don’t really have any objections to any of the motions here myself, but if you have any particular concerns or strong feeling please comment below or email me at axs278@bham.ac.uk
